Acquired
Brain Injury (ABI)
An acquired brain is an injury to the brain, which is
not hereditary, congenital, and degenerative or caused
by birth trauma.
Traumatic
Brain Injury (TBI)
Traumatic brain injury is a type of an acquired brain
injury. Traumatic brain injury is caused when a force
impacts the brain affecting cognitive (thought process)
and or physical (movement) functioning. There are two
types of TBI: open head injury (also know as a penetrating
injury) and closed head injury
Open
and Closed Head Injuries
Open
head injuries' where the skull has been penetrated:
an example of this includes a gunshot or a sharp object,
which has pierced the skull.
Closed
head injuries' refer to injuries where the skull remains
intact, an example of this is shaken baby syndrome,
or a car accident where a collision caused the brain
to jolt, causing tissue damage as it impacts against
the skull. There is no visible wound with closed head
injuries.
